Rules & Regulations

NMDT CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE

  1. Arrive 10 minutes early to prepare for class.
  2. Respect fellow dancers by arriving quietly.
  3. Be ready when your class begins.
  4. Never touch the mirrors.
  5. Never hang on the ballet barres.
  6. Do not stand on the legs of the ballet barres.
  7. Never wear street shoes on the dance floor (covered with marley flooring).
  8. Take your belongings home with you, and clean up after yourself.
  9. Never chew gum during class time.
  10. There is NO talking during class time. If you have a question, raise your hand and ask the instructor. If your child continues to talk, act aggressively towards others, or is disruptive, he/she will be asked to sit out of class. If negative behavior continues, a student/parent/teacher conference will be arranged. Each NMDT instructor is allowed to ask a student to sit out of class for disruptive behavior.
  11. If you arrive late for class, please ask the instructor if you may still join the class.
  12. Students should applaud the instructor after class.
  13. Students should thank the instructor, and their assistant, after class.
  14. Students should thank their partner after partnering class.

PARENT OBSERVATION

Class observation is welcomed at NMDT, however, please refrain from talking during class time; whispers and slight movements are distracting to instructors and students. Children of all ages have a hard time remaining focused. Please help the students learn that talking is not appropriate during class time. Be a good role model.

Never offer corrections to your child while he/she is in class. It is very confusing for the student because they do not know who is in charge of the class. The instructor is aware that sometimes a student is on the wrong leg, or facing the wrong direction. The instructor takes each child’s strengths and weaknesses into consideration. Each child develops at a different pace and may not get the steps right away; but will with time and practice.

When observing class, please turn off your cell phone. If you have younger children/siblings with you, please keep them off of the dance floor, and otherwise keep them from distracting the class. If you have an infant, and they begin to cry, please leave the studio until the crying stops.

Remember that class observation is a privilege; most dance studios don’t allow it. We will continue to encourage it at NMDT--as long as these guidelines are met.

The policy regarding any questions or concerns you may have about your student is as follows: Write a signed and dated letter describing your concern. Mail the letter to NMDT at 149 Central Park Square, or present the letter to the director. She will then review your letter with the appropriate faculty member to determine an answer to your concern. You will then receive a written response from the faculty member, and/or the director. If needed, a meeting will be scheduled at a convenient time for both parties to discuss the matter further.

CLASS PLACEMENT AND LEVEL CHANGES

You child’s class placement depends on several factors. Age, experience, discipline, desire, dedication, ability, and natural talent are all taken into consideration when he/she enrolls at NMDT. Depending on individual achievement, any student may be moved up or down in level during the year. Level changes for the following year are posted in May. These placements, and changes, reflect our recognition of the student skills and abilities, and our desire to improve them.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Announcements concerning upcoming events, rehearsal schedules, DVD/VHS orders, level changes, dance workshops, intensives etc., will be posted in a timely manner on the studio bulletin board, the door of the studio, and on our website. Please check these locations frequently. Group e-mails will be sent out prior to company performances and recital times to keep you informed. IT IS IMPORTANT TO WRITE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS ON YOUR REGISTRATION FORM!

HOLIDAYS

NMDT is closed during LAPS’ winter break, spring break, and Thanksgiving break. Also, there are no classes on the Wednesday prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. NMDT does offer classes on Monday holidays such as Labor Day, Memorial Day and Martin Luther King Day, unless otherwise notified by the class instructor.

SNOW DAYS

There are no classes at NMDT when the LAPS close due to inclement weather. If the weather clears later in the day, you will be notified by phone or e-mail as to the status of classes that evening. IT IS IMPORTANT TO ADD YOUR WORK PHONE NUMBER ON YOUR REGISTRATION FORM SO WE CAN CONTACT YOU IN CASE OF CLASS CANCELLATION DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER.

CLASS CANCELLATION

Any classes at NMDT may be cancelled due to lack of enrollment. If you are unable to attend a different class, your money will be refunded.

WATER

No water is provided at the NMDT studio. Please write your child’s name on a water bottle, and send it with them to class. Unidentified water bottles will be thrown away.
