BEGINNING BALLET THROUGH ADVANCED BALLET

Dress Code: Girls in these levels are REQUIRED to wear Capezio, mesh mock seam convertable tights (Style #9 from DiscountDance.com-Link to:
http://www.discountdance.com/frame_set.php3?mf=/dancewear/page_TI_p1.html) and pink, canvas, split soled ballet slippers; also available at Discount Dance.com (http://www.discountdance.com). Girls may wear any leotard they wish. No ballet skirts are allowed during class time, but may be worn during rehearsals. Hair MUST be secured in a proper ballet bun. No jewelry should be worn. Girls MUST arrive in a cover up of some sort. All students MUST arrive at the studio wearing street shoes.
HAIR: Properly secured ballet buns MUST be worn in all levels of ballet. If your child consistently arrives for class without a properly secured ballet bun, she may be asked to sit out of class until she arrives prepared to dance.

How to Make a Proper Ballet Bun: Brush your child's hair into a neat, medium high ponytail. Put hair into an elastic ponytail holder. Coil the ponytail in a clockwise direction. Using large sturdy hair pins, begin attaching the ponytail to the head around the elastic ponytail holder in a clockwise direction. Continue until you have a circular bun on the head. The shape should be flat, not pointing out of the head in a cone shape. Apply a hair net, to the bun and continue to double the net around the bun until it doesn't stretch anymore. Add a couple more hair pins to keep the hair net in place. A light application of hair spray may then be used to keep hair smooth around the face.
If you need assistance, please make an appointment with your child's instructor and she will gladly help you.

Boys in these levels may wear black tights, and white t-shirts, and black ballet slippers. Boys may also choose to wear sweatpants, shorts, sweatshirts, or t-shirts with black ballet slippers.
How to Sew Elastics on Ballet Slippers: Your ballet slippers will arrive with 2 pieces of elastic attached at the heel, and a drawstring elastic running around the shoe. Put the shoe on your child's foot. The shoe should not hurt their big toe, but should be fairly snug. Toes should not be cramped up in the shoe. Pull up the drawstring of the shoe to tighten it enough to keep the shoe on the heel when they move around, but not so tight that it digs into the heel. Tie 3 or 4 knots in the drawstring and cut off the excess leaving about ½ inch poking out.

Criss-cross one of the elastics already attached at the heel, and secure it with a safety pin on the inside of the shoe. Take the other piece of elastic and attach it with a safety pin to the other side of the shoe. Make sure the elastic is tight enough across the top of the foot to hold the shoe on, but not so tight that it digs into the ankle or top of the foot.

Sew the 4 ends of elastic to the inside of the shoe and cut off excess. Sew securely so the elastics don't pop off during class or performance. When attaching elastics, be sure to sew the elastic on the inside of the foot near the arch of the foot, and match it on the other side. The 4 loose ends of elastic should not be sewn near the heel, but closer to the arch of the foot.

Never dance with safety pins in shoes, dance clothes, or costumes. Ballet slippers or pointe shoes should always be worn on the same feet. You can write the letter "R" in one of the shoes, so the student always knows which one goes on the correct foot. Also, use an indelible marker to write your child's name inside the shoe.

If you need assistance, please make an appointment with your child's instructor and she will gladly help you.

They may be washed in cold water, but not dried in the machine. Even washed in cold, they will shrink slightly.

JAZZ, TAP, HIP HOP: Dress Code: Students enrolled in jazz, tap or hip hop, may wear any form fitted attire they wish with the appropriate foot wear. See instructor for which type of shoes they prefer. No jewelry should be worn. Female students MUST arrive in a cover up of some sort. All students MUST arrive at the studio wearing street shoes.

Hair: Hair MUST be secured off of face. Ponytails may be worn in tap and hip hop. See instructor for hair requirement for jazz.
